about

“A box of chocolates” is how they'd like to describe their new opus, ‘Puffy Palisades’. Each song in the album offers its own flavour and style, designed to be picked out at random. If listeners are looking for a band who can freely foray into multiple styles and genres, all the while maintaining a continuous fidelity, ‘Puffy Palisades’ will be a treat. Zazas Mama stated that their sound has a lot to do with the home studio setup, a notion they’ve kept consistently from their first album. Embracing the limited means of recording at home; then finishing parts in the studio, for them there isn't much of a difference between what is considered as a real song or a demo. Like a painter how a painter starts with rough sketches on a blank canvas, Zazas Mama decide to leave these sketches in there, hidden deep within the sonic layers, the mistakes visible to the eye.

“They start as sketches and they develop into the full thing, but we keep them (the sketches) in there” - Zazas Mama

Recording began in 2020 during the covid-19 pandemic, it roughly took a year to finish the whole album with an additional year to mix with recording engineer Luke Fuller. What is seen as a 2 year project, most of the songs were completed within a day, with time mainly spent letting things ripen. Now in 2023, Zazas Mama has already begun their third album, well before the ‘Puffy Palisades’ release. This truly displays their songwriting and recording process as continuous, creating experiments like mad scientists without giving any thought of who it's for.

“It feels like we finished it in about a year and another year for mixing and living with it. Even though each song only took a day to write and record. When we look back, it’s now become a whole catalog of songs, with some that don’t meet the final cut of the album that might never see the light of day”. - Zazas Mama

Lyrically, the songs are about music itself. Take their number ‘Genre’ for instance, a single that was released last September by Palm House Records for their upcoming album. ’Genre’ explores broader context and meanings within the music industry, and how music is generally labeled under specific genres. To Zazas Mama, Categorizing music into genres is simply marketing labels to make us talk about music with ease, when in reality, musical language is best not delivered through words, but by playing, recording and releasing. For Zazas Mama, they don’t think about what genre they’re making while recording, they just make music. Whichever genre their music may be, we can only listen, experience, and create our own meaning of what Zazas Mama is for ourselves.

“We don't really care about any of that genre stuff really. When we make something, it will eventually be placed under genres, labels, and boxes, so we decided to make and write music inspired by music itself. The rest of it was just us having fun, being funny and also personal at the same time.” - Zazas Mama

Freedom in music itself is what’s important for Zazas Mama. For them, if no one knows who they are, no one will be expecting anything. They say they're a band that no one has ever heard of and never will. Some radio stations in Sydney have described their music as “genreless genre music”, this remark is an interesting take for them, since they started out with the idea of being anonymous, removing identity from themselves, allowing them to experiment without any context in order for their music to speak for itself. Eventually, when asked about what the audience wants to hear, they don't really think about what future listeners would like. What’s important; the music, or the listener? We know that first and foremost, the musician is always the first listener.

‘Puffy Palisades’ is now available on all digital streaming platforms. Released by Palm House Records, an independent record label based in Jakarta, Indonesia home to local artists such as Sirati Dharma, Sleep Shelter, Sasan Fai, SMSR, K.N.Z., and Strolling Wizards.
